sustainable & reliable

Quaise Energy is ushering in a new era of sustainable, reliable power with Project Obsidian, the world's first commercial deployment of superhot enhanced geothermal systems (EGS).

Clean power at scale

Located in Central Oregon, our flagship facility will initially supply 50 megawatts of reliable, zero-carbon baseload power, with plans to scale up to 250 megawatts and meet the rapidly growing demand for always-on energy.

new & proven Technology

Our use of new and proven technology will enable utility-scale projects that can compete with today’s most efficient power plants, while keeping costs competitive with fossil fuels, and prioritizing environmental stewardship
and community benefits.

The Earth’s crust holds an enormous reservoir of geothermal heat—constant, always available, and not impacted by weather or geopolitics. But until now, the deepest, hottest portions of this resource have been technically and economically out of reach.

Project Obsidian will redefine energy generation by making superhot geothermal accessible at scale. Our facility, set to come online in 2030, will harness new and proven technology to reach superhot temperatures, delivering reliable energy with a rare combination of zero-carbon emissions, firm baseload capacity, and location flexibility.

Project Obsidian will also provide a new energy source for Central Oregon, supporting the regional electric grid and benefiting the communities it serves.

Developed after more than a decade of research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Quaise’s technology uses a gyrotron to produce concentrated millimeter wave energy to penetrate rock and reach superhot conditions — over 300°C (572°F) — at depths and temperatures other technologies cannot reach economically. Tapping these higher temperatures allows our geothermal plants to produce 5-10 times more electricity per well than conventional geothermal systems. Our technology has successfully penetrated more than 100 meters through granite in field conditions, proving our approach works in rock types that mirror the basement geology where superhot rock is located.

LIVING-WAGE JOBS

Quaise is committed to creating lasting benefits for the communities we serve. Project Obsidian will create living-wage jobs and generate needed tax revenues while building critical infrastructure necessary to reduce the rising cost of energy in Oregon.

POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACT

Positive social impact is a core part of Quaise’s mission, and our focus on community extends beyond energy. We believe it is vital to support local communities where we work through partnerships and philanthropy.

Research & Education

Investments in research and education are a central part of that commitment. We are partnering with the Experimental Deep Geothermal Energy (EDGE) lab through Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) to better understand the underground conditions at Project Obsidian and those common to superhot geothermal systems.

LONG-TERM VALUE

At the same time, we are actively engaging with elected officials and community leaders to ensure Project Obsidian reflects local priorities and delivers long-term value for Oregon. We believe in building a stronger, more resilient Oregon together.

A Clear Path Ahead to Energy Independence

Project Obsidian will be a 250 MW power plant once completed, developed in phases, using a combination of conventional drill bits and our millimeter wave drilling system. We will begin with a 50 MW development, drilling hotter than other geothermal projects to demonstrate the power density advantages of superhot geothermal. In phase two, we’ll expand the capacity by an additional 200 MW to access deeper, hotter rock below the first set of wells, reaching temperatures up to 850 F. This approach ensures reliable near-term delivery while showcasing the transformative potential of our millimeter wave drilling technology.

This first-of-its-kind superhot geothermal project will set a new standard for sustainable, resilient infrastructure, designed to meet the world’s rapidly growing energy needs by expanding the geographic reach of geothermal power worldwide.

We are committed to rigorous safety and environmental stewardship throughout every stage of development, and our timeline, which follows a methodical, milestone-driven approach, reflects this commitment as we lay the groundwork for a sustainable energy future.
